Falling is Not a Normal Part of Aging

Did you know that contrary to conventional thinking, falling is not a normal part of aging? Most falls are preventable and one of the most important risk factors is the lack of physical activity.  A lack of physical activity results in poor muscle tone, decreased strength, and loss of bone mass and flexibility.

Make the Connection with Your Parents

Falls among baby boomers are increasing also, so get up and move with your folks! Inspire them and do something positive for them and for yourself. Just 15 minutes a day or 30 minutes 3 times a week can provide significant health benefits. The good news is that it’s never too late to exercise or get involved in a fun activity, like walking or swimming.

Regular physical activity can reduce falls among the elderly by:

  • Improving balance.
  • Contributing to healthier bones, muscles and joints.
  • Helping improve mood by reducing anxiety and depression.
  • Reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke and diabetes.
  • Resulting in fewer hospitalizations, doctor visits and medications.
