Healthy nutrition for the elderly is essential for both good physical and mental health. A gerontologist advised that seniors who eat well increase their odds of overcoming illness and living a longer life. A smart heart-healthy choice for better senior care is the Mediterranean diet.
Research has shown that following a Mediterranean diet is protective against a variety of conditions such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and certain cancers. Just recently, the Mediterranean diet option has also been linked to a lower risk for Alzheimer’s Disease.
Here are some diet tips for better senior care:
Ø Cook with a splash of olive oil
Ø Use herbs and spices, instead of salt to flavor food
Ø Incorporate legumes (dried beans and peas) into your meals
Ø Cook fish at least one night a week instead of meat
Ø Try a small amount of walnuts or almonds as a snack
Ø Eat fruits and vegetables
Ø Exercise
And, eating with family and friends is always a plus!
